USA Today’s personal tech guru, Edward Baig, took time out of his busy schedule to play with the new G1 and he welcomed ‘the invasion of other Android phones’. Of course, no review of the G1 would be complete without a mention of ShopSavvy. The team here at Big in Japan was busy scrambling to meet the October 22nd US launch of T-Mobile’s G1 when we learned that ShopSavvy was selected by T-MobileUK as one of two featured applications. According to Mike Butcher at TechCrunchUK, T-Mobile is launching the G1 in the UK on October 30th. I can confirm that ShopSavvy will be launching in conjunction with the UK launch. More than 25,000 UK consumers have pre-ordered the Google powered phone.

That is Om Malik’s thesis in a post titled, “Why Windows Mobile is in Trouble“. Om suggested, “It didn’t take long for me to conclude that the device was well designed, sturdy, fast, easy to use and very intuitive — many of the same sentiments already expressed by experts such as Walt Mossberg of The Wall Street Journal and über gadget blogs Engadget and Gizmodo. (Of course, we share similar concerns as well.)” Going on saying, “Google’s Android, in my opinion, is a direct competitor to Windows Mobile. Put another way, it’s Windows Mobile done right. I say this because I have tried dozens of Windows Mobile-based phones and their user interface always leaves me feeling like someone with multiple cuts being submerged in salt water. Don’t get me wrong – I think Windows Mobile as an OS has come a long way since its early, awkward roots. It’s just that the new guys are better. A lot better.”

Mike Arrington asks if the login system on the G1 (T-Mobile’s Android phone) is secure suggesting that oil from your fingers might allow someone (presumably your girlfriend) to ‘break-in’. FYI – if your hardware is in the hands of someone that wants the data onboard, the silly little four digit PIN on the iPhone or the cool finger trace on the G1 isn’t going to stop them for long. The PIN on your cell phone is only designed to prevent ‘casual intrusion’ from associates and loved ones. It is NOT designed to keep out people who would steal your data for nefarious reasons.
Oh and if your G1 screen is anything like mine, it is COMPLETELY smudged. The glass does not get worn down in the pattern either, so I think you are okay. If the only time you touch the screen is to login you need to remember to wipe your phone before leaving it on your desk for your girlfriend to pick up. The Android unlock screen in action:

Darren Murph explained in a post that 1,500,000 T-Mobile G1s have been pre-ordered in a post with that title. Of course we hope he is right, but at last report T-Mobile had sold 60,000 G1s via pre-order. According to reports from the Wall Street Journal, HTC (the company that makes the G1) expected to ship 600,000 to 700,000 units this year – half of what Engadget is reporting have already pre-sold. Someone call the Fed, the depression is over!
