OMG! ShopSavvy is available on iPhone!

Here is the link: http://bit.ly/shopsavvyiphone

Couple of notes. First, the icon is a bit munged up, but we aren’t going to complain (we will fix next release).  Second, we have a BIG improvement coming in a week or so relative to scanning.  Once you know how to scan with ShopSavvy for the iPhone it works great, but until you do it is a little hard.  Our beta testers (thanks for your help) came up with a bunch of ideas that will make it MUCH easier to scan and we should implement those in the next couple of weeks.  Look for an update every two weeks (I know this is annoying, but we promise the updates will be worth it).  In the meantime, enjoy.  Oh and thanks to Apple for all their support!  You guys rock.

    How do you scan?
I tried many products and shopSavvy won’t scan. If I plug in the barcode by hand, the product comes right up.

Sorry you are having issues. First, scanning books, dvds, electronics works best (we are bad on food). Second, try holding the scanner at various distances from the items you are scanning. Third, we are going to release a new version of ShopSavvy that is a direct result of our beta tester’s feedback. Basically we are going to include scanning hints that help the user. Finally, we have an update in two weeks that makes the scanning near foolproof. Stick with us, we will get the app up to speed for you. In the meantime try different items and let us know…

Congratulations on releasing ShopSavvy for iPhone AT LAST ! It took you over a year, from what i gather.

While it arrives in App store 6-7 months behind pic2shop and RedLaser, it brings polished interface and much more of the feeling of a finished application than the other two.

This being a free app (like pic2shop), I expect its arrival will be major hit for RedLaser popularity, which currently is in the top 10 grossing apps of the store, http://appshopper.com/bestsellers/grossing

The quality of scanning is not bad with fixed-focus iPhone – it is up to par with pic2shop/RedLaser. I did a good hundred of scans of DVDs, books, food packages and all 3 programs recognize ~80% of the UPCs. Sometimes i had to persevere and scan multiple times with all of the programs.

So in first iteration, the quality of barcode reading is as good as the other two had accomplished in multiple iterations.

One annoyance though: When scanning with ShopSavvy, there is no indication of any kind if the scanner is positioned “nearly correct” and about to be able to recognize the code. The others have helper cues – pic2shop scan-line shows in colors in green segments that it thinks are barcode; RedLaser changes the color of the bounding rectangle arrows to green (btw, i vote it the kludgiest interface of the three apps).
