How to get more local retailers in ShopSavvy

This afternoon I received an email from Robert in Oahu, Hawaii who asked if we could get more local retailers for his island. Robert’s request isn’t unusual, in fact it is very common. Despite having more than 40,000 retailers in our system there are millions of stores we have never heard of, especially in Oahu. So how do we get more retailers in our system? Simple, we listen to users. You may have noticed that you can ‘EDIT’ or add local retailers in ShopSavvy (see picture). By adding a new local retailer and adding a price for an item you are actually alerting our team that their is demand for that retailer in our system. We take all of these ‘referrals’ and the most requested retailers get on the top of our list to add.

Once our retail data team gets enough referrals from users they begin calling on the retailer to determine how best to get their inventory and pricing in our system. Some retailers just won’t give access to their inventory and pricing, but many will. If there is a retailer you want to see in our system take a few minutes and add them to our system. Just visit their store and begin scanning items – add the retailer and the price if it is missing. The more you add the more attention they will get in our system. If a few other users add items from that retailer it stands a good chance that we will start working on it. So help us out and let us know what you want us to work on…

ShopSavvy selected as Windows Phone 7 App of the Week!

http://www.careace.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/shopsavvy1.bmpThe guys over at the Windows Phone Dev Podcast selected ShopSavvy as their app of the week. Hosted by Ryan and Travis Lowdermilk, the Windows Phone Dev Podcast is the first online show, exclusively, about Windows Phone development. This show is produced by developers for developers. Each week, Ryan and Travis Lowdermilk traverse the exciting world of the Windows Phone development platform.  They’ll discuss news and latest developments, all the while, putting it in the perspective of what it means for developers.

ShopSavvy’s Favorite Chef? Giada de Laurentis!

If you check out the sample lists included in ShopSavvy you will see one called ‘Hot Food‘. It includes a number of cookbooks and cooking gear by Giada de Laurentis. Of course, this is not by accident. When the ShopSavvy team was building sample lists the idea for a ‘cooking’ list was brought up and immediately the entire team thought Giada would be the perfect chef to highlight. Our question? Does Giada use ShopSavvy?

Don’t know who Giada is? Shame on you. Giada Pamela De Laurentiis, born August 22, 1970 is an Italian American chef, writer, television personality, and the current host of the Food Network programs Everyday Italian, Behind the Bash, Giada’s Weekend Getaways, Giada in Paradise, and Giada at Home. She also appears regularly as a contributor and guest co-host on NBC’s Today. De Laurentiis is the founder of the catering business GDL Foods.

ShopSavvy Premium Barcode Scanner

http://ww1.prweb.com/prfiles/2010/11/01/4727974/0_ShopSavvyHiResScanningAvatar.jpgSome of our more observant users noticed that we launched a paid version of ShopSavvy on iOS last week. We had two primary reasons for launching a paid app.

First, there is a paid scanner on iOS that does very well on the charts simply because we are free. Some consumers assume that just because an app is free it must be inferior than a similar paid app. In this particular case our app is 100% better in almost every way. Last week that other app was included as a finalist in a ‘people’s choice‘ type contest determining the ‘Best Shopping App’. Their app received less than 1% of the vote, while ShopSavvy received more than 57% of the vote. By including a premium or paid version of ShopSavvy in the same category as this competitor we hope to replace them at the top of the paid charts.

Second, lots of our users email us each day explaining how ShopSavvy saved them money and they ask how they can return the favor. In the past we asked them to provide us a good rating, but in the next version of ShopSavvy users will be able to upgrade to the ‘paid’ version of ShopSavvy almost as if it was a ‘hat tip’. So if ShopSavvy has ever saved you some money send us a couple of bucks by upgrading to the premium version. The premium version has a few extra features that haven’t made it to the free version and it does not include Apple’s iAds. Of course, all successful/useful features will quickly make their way to the free (flagship) version of ShopSavvy – think of the paid version as a sneak peek at the latest and greatest. For example, the premium version has our new scan screen as shown here. The free version will get this feature in a week or two.

To be clear, ALL versions of ShopSavvy will always include the BEST scanning technology available, the BEST local and online results. Download ShopSavvy Premium Here.

Android Firmware Breakdown for ShopSavvy

Lots of developers complain it is hard to develop for Android. Yesterday, we reported that ShopSavvy is running on 142 different Android (and three Blackberry) phones. You’d think that was the main issue. You’d be wrong. The real issue is the diverse set of firmware Android devices are running. According to our logs there are more than 239 firmware versions running ShopSavvy on Android. Here is a breakdown, sorted by percentage of devices:

Android Devices Running ShopSavvy

The reason we found out that there were a few BlackBerry devices running ShopSavvy for Android was because we were trying to get an idea of what devices we needed to support. The sheer number of Android devices running ShopSavvy is amazing. More than 142 devices (about 4.5% of devices are not identified). The top ten includes:

Motorola Droid X / Shadow, HTC EVO 4G, HTC Incredible, Motorola Droid, Samsung Galaxy S i9000, Motorola Droid 2, HTC Desire, Huawei M860 and HTC Desire HD.

ShopSavvy was one of the featured applications on the original Android phone – the T-Mobile G1. Two years later the device still represents .7% of our users – talk about staying power. If you want the full list with usage percentages just email me and I will send it along. Here is a pie chart (almost impossible to read) of the break down:

New Scan Screen on ShopSavvy

We have been listening to users comments and feedback and decided that it was time to update the scanning screen on ShopSavvy. This screen is available in our premium version of ShopSavvy, but will be available on our free, flagship versions on the iPhone and Android in the coming days/weeks. The other day I saw a user trying desperately to scan a barcode. She didn’t realize that her iPhone case was blocking the camera. It was then that I realized that we needed more hints. Notice the old screen:

It is very minimalistic. Just four ‘aiming bars’ and no hints. Now see our updated scan screen:

We highlighted the scan area by darkening the background. We included a red line (a throw back to the original ShopSavvy on Android) that users really seem to understand. We also, included a ‘skake to scan’ feature suggested by Fooducate that helps with first time users who want to check out the app, but don’t have a barcode handy. Here is a video:

Android on BlackBerry?

http://www.desinformado.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/admob-blackberry-android-increased.jpg

BlackBerry users have been bugging us for two years to release ShopSavvy on BlackBerry, but to date they have been disappointed. Well according to ShopSavvy’s flurry logs someone in Waterloo, Ontario (Canada for the geographically challenged oh and BTW it wheres RIM is based) has been running ShopSavvy for Android on various BlackBerry devices. Here are the details:

• BlackBerry 8300 ran ShopSavvy on January 31, 2011
• BlackBerry 8600 ran ShopSavvy on January 17 and 24, 2011
• BlackBerry 8520 ran ShopSavvy on February 7, 2011

Earlier this month Rachel King wrote a ZDNet story suggesting that BlackBerry’s new PlayBook tablet is going to support Android apps. This makes sense since BlackBerry OS can support Java Virtual Machines  and it would be pretty easy to compile Android in one of the them.

This is a pretty interesting development. If you have any details please let us know – we would love to optimize ShopSavvy for the new BlackBerry+Android.

UPDATE: Several blogs suggested they didn’t believe this since we didn’t include the Flurry logs so here they are:

ShopSavvy wins Best Shopping App

We are pleased to accept the APPScar (i.e. Oscars for Apps) for Best Shopping App. It was a hard fought contest between fierce competitors such as Amazon Mobile, Groupon and ShopKick. Last night the voting was neck and neck, but in the end ShopSavvy came out on top with 57% of the votes cast. Thanks for taking the time to vote. Thanks to Laptop Magazine for the award – we really appreciate it.
