Some of our more observant users noticed that we launched a paid version of ShopSavvy on iOS last week. We had two primary reasons for launching a paid app.

First, there is a paid scanner on iOS that does very well on the charts simply because we are free. Some consumers assume that just because an app is free it must be inferior than a similar paid app. In this particular case our app is 100% better in almost every way. Last week that other app was included as a finalist in a ‘people’s choice‘ type contest determining the ‘Best Shopping App’. Their app received less than 1% of the vote, while ShopSavvy received more than 57% of the vote. By including a premium or paid version of ShopSavvy in the same category as this competitor we hope to replace them at the top of the paid charts.

Second, lots of our users email us each day explaining how ShopSavvy saved them money and they ask how they can return the favor. In the past we asked them to provide us a good rating, but in the next version of ShopSavvy users will be able to upgrade to the ‘paid’ version of ShopSavvy almost as if it was a ‘hat tip’. So if ShopSavvy has ever saved you some money send us a couple of bucks by upgrading to the premium version. The premium version has a few extra features that haven’t made it to the free version and it does not include Apple’s iAds. Of course, all successful/useful features will quickly make their way to the free (flagship) version of ShopSavvy – think of the paid version as a sneak peek at the latest and greatest. For example, the premium version has our new scan screen as shown here. The free version will get this feature in a week or two.
